With some help from my husband and daughter, I finally have the last of my cherry trees and some veggies/fruits in the ground. I’m not sure if the third cherry tree will survive, it spent more time inside than it should have and was starting to look less than healthy, but it’ll be nice if it does make it.
For my little garden, I have tomatoes, cucumber, watermelon, and peppers. Not a whole lot, no more than two of each of those plants. Enough just to get things started. It’s going to take a few years to turn the clay soil into a more suitable medium for growing a bounty of edible plants. It’s only about a foot and a half down that the “soil” you pull up could be turned into pottery. Which I why my small group of plants took three large bags of store-bought soil to get properly planted.
The tough part right now is keeping my fresh plants watered. Alabama summers get hot real fast and fighting drought is the reason I haven’t been able to successfully grow anything before. However, this time I’m actually working with the ground, instead of pots, and have the benefit of mulch.
