Update: We submitted an offer for this house, but ended up withdrawing it. While most of the work is surface level, another look revealed a couple things that were more than what we wanted to deal with (partially because of money, but only partially). So we’re looking elsewhere for a potential home.
I’ve been tossing around the idea of buying a house with my husband but we hadn’t even begun looking. Then while casually checking out listings, I found a house that met our base requirements. While our requirements are mostly easy to match in Huntsville, the difficult part to meet is our price limit versus house location. Average pricing for our choice area is around $200k, not a super-high price, but more than we can arrange to have money for. So we were pretty excited to find a house going a little under half that, even if we knew there might be some tough caveats.
Well, this (Thursday) afternoon, we braved the drizzle to check out the house with our realtor (who happens to be an aunt we trust). Without going into every detail, the house is a mess, but the kind of mess that looks worse than it probably will be. So we’re going to try for the house and see about having it inspected for less obvious problems; hopefully the worst part is just the layer of dirt and handful of abandoned junk. There is no guarantee though, of us getting the house, even with pre-approval for a loan. We’re not the only ones who noticed a carbon anomaly in our choice location.
Some pictures of the house:
If we get the house, and probably a month (or two) after closing, I’ll see about uploading some “after cleanup” pictures.
